In most cases, foreigners can apply for Hungarian citizenship after a long residence in the country, but it is possible to shorten the period of residency or reduce the list of requirements if there are ties with the country and its nationals.

Spouses of citizens are not required to reside in the country and demonstrate their financial status, but they do need to know the language. The application form, passport and birth certificate filled out in Hungarian, must be included in the application package. The rest of the contents of the dossier must prove that you fulfill the conditions of your method of citizenship. The application is submitted by you in person at the authorized citizenship office. There is also an option to make a request through the electronic system. The case is registered and accepted for work, and within 3 months it is transferred to the Prime Minister's Office. The President issues a decree granting citizenship, after which the applicant is invited to the City Hall to take the oath. The ceremony must take place within one year after the decree is issued and this is the moment when you become a citizen. After taking the oath, you will be issued a special status granting sheet and an internal passport.
A Hungarian citizen's passport is issued at a passport office or consulate/embassy. The naturalization document, residence address registration if available, Hungarian ID card, photo are provided at the time of application. The standard period of passport preparation is 20 days, but on request it can be received in 5 days or even 24 hours.
